Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Malt and honey, then intensely fruity. Almost artificially so. Cherry, strawberry, and apples. Vanilla. Mild sherry and faint sulfur. Then the malt returns. An excellent nose.
  • Taste: Thick and syrupy. Malt-forward. Sulfury sherry. Honey and fruits coming into focus. Oddly unbalanced with the nose.
  • Finish: Sweet honey and mild bitter oak. A lingering sweetness. Quite refreshing. Very nice!

Description

Benriach 10 Years Old Curiositas (Peated)

Benriach 10 Years Old Curiositas (Peated), this is the first core expression comprising spirit produced predominantly since the 2004 takeover by Billy Walker and his consortium. A classic Speyside whisky.

The flagship expression from the BenRiach distillery. This 10 year old Speyside single malt is drawn from ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks after at least a decade of slumber, resulting in a malt that shows off the distillery’s style wonderfully. Expect hearty barley backed up by orchard fruit and toasted almond, alongside just a hint of herbaceous oak.

Benriach is a small distillery that is located in the Speyside region of Scotland, just to the south of the city of Elgin. It was founded in 1897 by John Duff & Co, who built it to aid production at the adjacent Longmorn distillery. They named it (rather unimaginatively) Longmorn 2. The distillery was renamed Benraich, which translates as ‘speckled mountain’ from Gaelic, in 1965 following a long period of closure.

The distillery is currently owned by The Benriach Distillery Company, who took control from previous owners Pernod Ricard in 2004. The distillery had been closed but the company invested heavily and the Benriach single malt brand has since gone from strength to strength, winning numerous awards. The annual production capacity is approximately 1.8 million litres.
