But what exactly is it? And what is so loved about this drink? Beer is a fermented, alcoholic beverage that is produced from the combination of water, malt, hops and yeast.

Beer brewers use a combination of different elements and processes to create different flavours of beers. However, the basics of brewing beer remain the same.

To brew beer, malt is heated in water to create a mash. The mash is then strained to capture a sugary liquid known as wort. The worth is boiled with hops until the flavour loved by all is captured. The liquid is cooled before allowing it to ferment. During fermentation, yeast is added so that the sugars in the liquid are converted into carbon dioxide and alcohol. Most beer producers allow the liquid to sit for one to three weeks after fermentation and is filtered again before packaging.

There are a few types of beer. When people think of this drink, it is usually on the terms of where it originated such as Germany or Ireland. Although there seem like there are many types, most beer fit into two broad categories - ales and lagers.

Ale

Generally, ale is full-bodied, fresh-tasting and quenches thirst. Yeast used in ale enjoys a warm environment and completes fermentation within a few days time. The yeast produces many complex flavours such as fruitiness, earthy and spices.

Under ale, you will find wheat beer and Irish stouts.

Lager

Lager is crisp and refreshing. Yeast used in lager needs a few weeks to settle in and needs a cool environment. Most pale German and Mexican beers are lagers.

However, it can be a rather difficult task to really define craft beer. Craft beers are basically drinks made by smaller breweries. Alternatives to big breweries like Corona and Bud are thrown into this category.

To make beer drinking an enjoyable experience, use an ideal beer mug. Store it correctly by keeping bottles vertical in a cool and dark place. Make sure that your beer is chilled before serving. It tastes best when it’s served at 3°C to 5°C. Enjoy!

Anyone can drink beer. The multitude of flavours that hit your palate makes it a favorite alcoholic drink for many. It tastes bitter due to the hops, yeast due to the yeast, malty due to the malted grains, and refreshing due to the carbonation. What a mouthful!

As for beer food pairing, it goes best with roasted, smoked and barbecued food. Salty food is also recommended. Do not be afraid to try new combinations as it is quite a versatile drink.
