Moet & Chandon, also known as Moet, is a French fine winery and co-owner of world renowned luxury goods company – LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE. Founded by Claude Moet in 1743, the Epernay wine trader began shipping his wine from Champagne (the region in France) to Paris. The winery’s clientele included many nobles and aristocrats as the reign of King Louis XV coincided with the increased interest and demand for sparkling wine. In 1840, following the introduction of the concept of vintage champagne saw Moet marketing its first Moet & Chandon vintage 1842.
The best selling brand is the Moet & Chandon Imperial. This was introduced in the 1860s. However, the best known label is still the Dom Perignon.
In 1971, Moet & Chandon merged with Hennessy Cognac and in 1987 with Louis Vuitton to become LVMH (Louis-Vuitton-Moet-Hennessy) - the largest luxury group in the world. Continuing its legacy as a luxury winery, Moet & Chandon holds a royal warrant as a supplier of champagne to Queen Elizabeth II.
Since 1842, the house has released 74 vintage champagnes. Safeguarded in the Grand VIntage Reserve cellars, Moet & Chandon possesses the world’s most prestigious collection of vintage champagnes. Among the vintages still on the market include the Grand Vintage 2012, Grand Vintage Rose 2012 and Grand Vintage Rose 2009.
