What is Happy Hour?

Happy Hour is that joyous time of the day just after working hours from 5-7pm where restaurants serve food and beverages at a reduced price. The term “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere” comes to mind.

The “hour” in Happy Hour is, however, somewhat misleading as most establishments run this promotional strategy for two hours or more, giving visiting patrons plenty of time to relax and enjoy. Customers can look forward to unwinding after a long day’s hard work with a few pints of beer, good music, and delicious cocktails and appetisers. The best thing about Happy Hour is the half-price drinks, thus cutting the worry in your pocket while you indulge.

Why is National Happy Hour Day important?

Happy Hour promotions aren’t just a great deal for the customers. Restaurant and bar owners can also reap the benefits that they offer. Essentially, food and drink promotions generate media buzz. With the advent of social media, trending news spreads fast and the free publicity brings new customers through the door.

This daily event allows customers a taste of what an establishment has to offer, possibly turning new guests into regulars. Happy Hours are an ingenious way to fill in seats during slow business periods of the day and thus, increasing overall revenue.

Additionally, good business generated indirectly goes back to the local community. It creates more job opportunities, and helps enhance the economy. With everything considered, Happy Hours are a win-win for everyone.

The origins of National Happy Hour Day

The Happy Hour got its start from the most unlikely of places; the United States Navy. As early as 1914, American sailors aboard the dreadnought battleship, the U.S.S. Arkansas, would look forward to ‘the Happy Hour Social Event’ after a long day of busy work. The troops saw it as a whole hour of entertainment to take the load off and boost overall morale.

At the time, the term ‘Happy Hour’ referred to a variety of recreational activities such as boxing matches, smoking, dancing and of course, drinking! Despite alcohol being banned from the ship, sailors would smuggle them aboard by crateload.

Everything changed in 1920 when the 18th Amendment was passed in America. This law prohibited the sale, purchase and or consumption of alcohol throughout the whole country. It pushed drinking liquor out of bars and restaurants and into homes and speakeasies (underground liquor shops).

Left with no other choice, Americans had their alcohol in secrecy. Happy Hour now denoted the time when customers would down their illicit shots in secret clubs before heading for dinner. In 1933, the alcohol ban in America was lifted yet Happy Hour remained in many restaurants and became exponentially more popular due to not needing to conduct themselves in secrecy anymore. This resulted in the Happy Hour that we know and love today.

National Happy Hour Day was founded as a way to honour the history as well the cultural impact of the Happy Hour.

How to celebrate?

Here are a few activities to celebrate the occasion.

  • Hit the bar scene with a couple of friends

What better way to spend this unofficial holiday than gathering a group of buddies to catch up over a few mugs of half-off beer? Don’t limit yourself to your circle either. Be adventurous and make friends with other patrons at the bar. The entire point of happy hour is to bring people together over a common interest; alcohol!

  • Let out your inner foodie

Happy hour isn’t only about drinks. Restaurants and bars serve food at a discounted price too. There’s no better time to explore the hidden food gems that you may have not ordered if it weren’t for the cheaper prices.

  • Have a small get-together at home

It’s understandable that bars and pubs might not be for everyone. As an alternative, why not have a get together with a few buddies of yours at your place? Raise your glasses  and make a toast in honour of Happy Hour.

What are the most popular drinks during happy hour?
