Founded by Jasper Newton Daniel, Jack Daniel’s back story is what makes it such a popular whiskey. Since its creation, Jack Daniel’s has been crafted and distilled in Lynchburg, Tennessee. This distillery is also known as ‘Stillhouse Hollow’ or ‘Jack Daniel’s Hollow’ and is a major tourist attraction.  Associated with rock music and dive bars, Jack Daniel’s is so iconic that when people think of whiskey, this brand usually comes to mind first. Special distillation of Jack Daniels

The way Jack Daniel’s whiskey is produced and distilled is very well known because of the specific way it is done. The mash is composed of 80% corn, 12% rye, and 8% barley. The whiskey is distilled slowly through ten feet of hard sugar maple, with the additional step of charcoal filtering, bringing out a very strong yet distinctive flavour of maple syrup. This extra step in the process is known as ‘mellowing’ and removes impurities and the taste of corn. The distillation is then moved into new charred oak barrels to be matured.  In 1992, Jack Daniel’s was the pioneer when venturing into the ready-to-drink cocktail scene. Made with, of course, Jack Daniel’s whiskey, it released Country Cocktails and was eventually joined by single-serve bottles of canned cocktails.  There are actually four main varieties of Jack Daniel’s. Even then, these are varied with different proofs. The four main varieties are Jack Daniel’s Old. No. 7, Gentleman Jack, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel, and Tennessee Honey. Throughout the years, special editions and variations of the four have been produced and sold. 

How to drink Jack Daniel’s? 

You can drink it straight, on the rocks, with a dash of water or mix it to create cocktails. The favourite mixer to have with Jack Daniel’s is Coke, hence the cocktail name JD Coke, as it adds an effervescent sweetness and tastes of molasses to the drink. Apple juice, ginger ale, lemonade, lemon-lime soda and soda water are also pretty popular mixers. The mixers do not get in the way of the delicious flavours of the spirit. Rather, it enhances and brings to the table a whole new variety.  Famous Jack Daniels cocktails include the Jack Apple Fizz, Tennessee Apple, Jack Rye and Ginger, Tennessee Toddy, Gentleman’s Jack Sour, Bellini, and Jack Sour. 

Which is the most popular Jack Daniel’s? 

Amongst all the different types of Jack Daniel’s, the Old No. 7 is the most favoured because of the charcoal mellowed whiskey and unique aftertaste and flavour. Sweet, though it does not contain any sugar, the Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 is low in calories,  smooth and has distinguishable flavours of vanilla and licorice. Essential to creating the famous JD cocktail - Lynchburg Lemonade, the Old No. 7 does not have age statements and is bottled at 40 percent alcohol by volume (ABV).

A taste for non-whiskey drinkers - Jack Daniel’s Gentleman

Gentleman Jack appeals to drinkers who do not typically enjoy whiskey as it is mellow. In fact, it is ‘double mellowed’ during production as it takes another trip through the charcoal after ageing in the barrel, resulting in a really smooth taste. Many whiskey lovers find Gentleman Jack to be too light.
