History and origins
The brand was established by John Walker, a Scottish grocer from Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire. After John’s passing in 1859, his son, Alexander Walker, expanded the brand globally. He introduced the iconic square bottle in 1860, optimizing space and reducing breakage, and angled the label at 24 degrees for better visibility.
Originally launched in 1997 as Johnnie Walker Pure Malt 15 Years, the Green Label was renamed in 2004 to what it is known as today. Though discontinued globally in 2012, it was reintroduced in 2016.
The speciality of Green Label is that it is a vatted malt comprising whiskies from four distinct regions of Scotland- Speyside, Highland, Lowland and Island. Each whisky, matured for a minimum of 15 years, brings its unique character to the blend: the maritime smokiness of Talisker, the elegance of Linkwood, the robustness of Cragganmore, and the peaty allure of Caol Ila. It is matured in the finest American and European oak casks and bottled at 43% ABV.
Is Green Label a good whiskey?
This blended malt’s reputation precedes it. Its intricately balanced flavour profile, which marries fruity, sweet, and smoky notes, has garnered praise from both novices and connoisseurs. Its depth, complexity, and impeccable blending have solidified its place as a must-have in any whiskey collection.
Is Johnnie Walker Green Label discontinued?
In a move that surprised many, Johnnie Walker once decided to discontinue the beloved Green Label. However, the blend’s unwavering popularity led to its triumphant return. Today, it continues to enchant whiskey enthusiasts worldwide.
Is Green Label better than gold?
Choosing between Green and Gold is like choosing between two masterpieces. While the former boasts a pure malt blend, Gold Label Reserve offers a luxurious blend of malt and grain whiskies.
The Green captivates with its rich malty notes and smokiness, while the Gold Label mesmerizes with its creamy smoothness. Ultimately, the preference is subjective, resting on individual palates.
Tasting notes
This golden-amber-hued 15-year-old whisky is a sensory journey. It starts with a nose of clean fresh-cut grass and tropical fruit intertwined with black pepper, luxe vanilla and aromatic sandalwood.
On the palate, it is followed by an exotic dance between lush wood notes of oak and cedar with masterful undertones of garden fruits, stewed peaches and fragrant floral hints.
The finish is a hallmark smoky depth with a touch of peat and crumbly sea salt, making every taste a satisfying and intense revelation.
Is Green Label smooth?
A signature style of the whisky is its unparalleled silkiness. Each sip feels like velvet on the palate, making it an absolute delight to enjoy.
Is Green Label sweet?
Amidst its dynamic profile, this malt blend presents deep sweetened undertones. Think of orchard fruits drizzled with honey, complemented with apple cobbler, crunchy cereal hints and a touch of lustrous vanilla – all beautifully balanced with the peaty and spice-forward counterparts.
Serving tips
How do you drink Green Label?
To get the best tasting experience, it is all about experimentation. The straightforward way to drink it is neat. Mixing in a dash of water or having some cold water between each sip of the whisky can help unveil the intricate character. We recommend breathing in the aromas before savouring each sip slowly.
Ice can be added to play with the flavour profile by muting and enhancing different notes to create a refreshing beverage.
For a twist, this versatile spirit can also be used to create a sophisticated cocktail, either with the addition of the classic soda, coconut water (Caribbean influence), or even tea (an Asian rendition).
Food pairings
This whisky’s soft yet complex notes pair perfectly with a variety of mature cheeses, dark chocolate or meat dishes such as a succulent roast lamb or barbecued steak.
If you are a lover of spicy Chinese food, then the honeyed smoothness of this drink would also be ideal with a serving of dim sum or boiled fish and rice.
