Montes Purple Angel
Montes Purple Angel is a flagship Chilean Carmenère from Montes Wines, sourced from the prestigious Colchagua Valley, specifically Apalta and Marchigüe. Montes describes it as a benchmark expression of Carmenère, a grape rediscovered in Chile in 1994 and now closely associated with the country’s finest red wines.
This premium red wine is typically composed of 92% Carmenère and 8% Petit Verdot, a blend that gives Purple Angel its signature combination of plush dark fruit, spice, structure, and ageing potential. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak, with 70% in first-use barrels and 30% in second-use barrels, adding depth, polish, and complexity to the final wine.
In the glass, Montes Purple Angel shows a deep carmine-red colour. The nose is diverse and complex, led by ripe blackberry, plum, and blueberry, layered with notes of sweet spice, pink pepper, coffee, and tobacco from its time in French oak. On the palate, it is balanced and silky, with dark fruit and subtle dairy notes reappearing through its full body and very long finish.
The vineyards behind Purple Angel are located in Apalta and Marchigüe, two distinct Colchagua terroirs. Apalta contributes elegance through slower, more complete ripening, while cooler Marchigüe adds freshness, power, and concentration. This terroir-driven approach helps define Purple Angel as one of Chile’s most distinctive luxury red wines.
For serving, Montes recommends 17–19°C and decanting for at least one hour. It pairs especially well with red meat, rosemary lamb chops, pork ribs, and cannelloni.
