REAL COMPANHIA VELHA Royal Oporto 40 Year Old Tawny Porto. Real Companhia Velha, founded by King D. José I, in 1756 was created mainly by the most important farmers of the Douro Valley, and by more influential people from the city of Oporto, who were entrusted with the task of supporting the cultivation Of the vineyards, preserving their production and natural purity, for a benefit of Agriculture, Commerce and Public Health. Among the Company’s many public services, the most important event was the official demarcation of the Douro Valley. Out of curiosity during the French invasions in 1809, Napoleon Bonaparte’s troops demanded wines from the Royal Old Company as part of their rations. In 1811, the British officer, Lord Wellington and his troops, at the time they settled in the town of Lamego demanded a supply of 300 barrels of wines from the Royal Old Company. In 2016 Real Companhia Velha celebrated 260 years of uninterrupted activity in the service of Porto and Douro.
