Top Bombay Sapphire Gin Selection

First launched in 1986, Bombay Sapphire is one of the top gins in the world. Founded by English wine-merchant IDV, Diageo, the name originated from the popularity of gin in India during the reign of the British empire over there. The word sapphire on the other hand, refers to the violet-blue Star of Bombay, a 182 carat cabochon-cut star sapphire that comes from Sri Lanka.

In 1997, Diageo sold the brand over to Barcardi, one of the best spirits companies globally. The Bombay Sapphire gin bottle is a flat-sided and sapphire-coloured bottle. On the bottle label, there is a picture of Queen Victoria, making it very distinctive.

Bombay liquor is made out of 10 ingredients, namely almond, lemon peel, liquorice, juniper berries, orris root, angelica, coriander, cassia, cubeb and grains of paradise. The alcohol in this best gin is brought in from another supplier and then evaporated three times using a carterhead still. In order to make sure this blue gin has more flavour and aroma. The alcohol vapours are passed through a basket that holds the ten botanical ingredients. This is why this sapphire gin has a light and more floral taste compared to other gins.

To top it off, the water from Lake Vyrnwy is added to the bombay liquor so that the alcohol levels are brought down to 40%.

There are a few varieties to the Bombay drink. Among them is the Bombay Original London Dry Gin, also more popularly known as Bombay Original Dry. Bombay Sapphire East was launched in 2011 in New York and Las Vegas. There was a special edition produced in 2015 in the United Kingdom called the Star of Bombay. In this, the signature botanicals are used with the addition of bergamot and ambrette seeds.

Another variety of this blue alcohol is the Bombay Bramble. This has the fresh blackberries and raspberries with a 37.5% ABV. Finally, this best gin brand launched a limited edition gin called the Bombay Sapphire English Estate. Besides the typical Bombay Sapphire ingredients, three other botanicals, namely Pennyroyal mint, rosehip and hazelnut are added.

This drink is one of the most popular gins. The flavour is not overpowering, which makes it an ideal drink for mixing into any gin cocktail. Due to its versatility, it pairs well with a large variety of fruit and will mix well with other spirits such as vodka and whisky. Simple Bombay Sapphire drinks include the Bombay Sapphire gin and tonic and Bombay martini. It works in classic cocktails as well as in modern drink recipes.
