What is Dewar’s Story?
Founded by John Dewar in 1846, the business evolved after the Spirit Act, leading him to blend whiskies for a smoother taste. In 1880, his sons, John Alexander and Tommy, took over. John continued to perfect his father’s recipe to create the best-tasting blends ever made, while Tommy transformed how whisky was marketed and sold. This winning partnership would be the key to turning Dewar’s into a successful and globally recognised brand.
Is Dewar’s a Scotch Or a Whisky?
Dewar’s can be seen as both. A Scotch is simply a malted barley whisky made in Scotland and aged for at least three years in previously used oak barrels.
Dewar’s whiskies are specifically blended Scotches, a mixture of malt and grain Scotches distilled at multiple distilleries.
Tasting Notes: What Do Dewar’s Taste Like?
Each bottle of Dewar’s label offers a unique tasting experience that every spirit connoisseur must try:
Dewar’s White Label
Dewar’s flagship blend, introduced in 1899 after the Aberfeldy distillery opened. The White Label continues to win awards internationally.
Tasting notes: Opening with aromas of honey, peach, apple, and wood, the palate is medium-bodied with flavours of vanilla fudge, smoke, toffee, heather honey, and oak. It ends on a clean, slightly dry finish with lingering heather/honey overtones and the faintest touch of smoke.
Dewar’s Caribbean Smooth 8-Year-Old
The first in Dewar’s innovative cask series, this whisky is crafted from 8-year-old blended Scotch whisky – double-aged and finished in casks that previously held Caribbean rum – for a uniquely tropical flavour.
Tasting notes: A soft and mellow aroma with notes of caramel, brown sugar and tropical fruits. The smooth palate also contains caramel and brown sugar flavours, plus tropical fruits. The finish is short and sweet.
Dewar’s 8 Portuguese Smooth Port Cask Finish
The third release in Dewar’s double-aged blended Scotch whisky cask-finished series. This blend was aged for 8 years and finished in port wine casks for a period of 6 months.
Tasting notes: This golden straw blend has an aroma of subtle cherry notes that emphasise the apricot and honey of the signature dram. The palate is slick with coating notes of melon, more apricot, wild honey, and a dash of vanilla and toasted oak. The finish is medium-length, warm, and slightly drying.
Dewar’s 12-Year-Old
This blend is known as the ‘double-aged’ due to the 6 months of marrying in oak casks that the whisky does after initial maturation and blending.
Tasting notes: The aroma opens with light fruits (apples, pears) followed by malt, vanilla, subtly light chocolate, later caramel and roasted almonds. A very soft flavour profile with honey and pear, turning into a pleasant oak. Ends on a short finish with some oak and subtle bitterness.
Dewar’s 15-Year-Old
A lighter, smoother take on the classic recipe, this is the first Dewar’s Scotch to be blended by the brand’s current Master Blender, Stephanie Macleod.
Tasting notes: The nose has a good balance of sherried spices, nutty elements, and apple skin. The palate starts with oily walnuts before leading into fresh malt and sultanas, with notes of chewy vanilla toffee. The finish has more sweet dried fruit notes with a touch of grassiness.
Dewar’s 18-Year-Old
This indulgent dram has picked up countless awards all over the world since it was introduced to the range in 2003.
Tasting notes: Sandalwood, fresh fruit. Orange zest, cut flowers on the nose, with a little smoke and honeyed sweetness. A medium, balanced flavour profile with notes of berry fruits and toasted barley. It ends on a long, spicy finish with a touch of oak.
Dewar’s ‘Double Double’ 21-Year-Old
Part of the limited edition ‘Double Double’ range, this blend was crafted using the ‘quadruple ageing’ process pioneered by Master Blender Stephanie Macleod. The 21-year-old has been finished in Oloro sherry cakes to give it a cinnamon taste.
Tasting notes: Highly pleasant and appealing on the nose, featuring hints of honey, peach cobbler, grilled pineapple, roasted pork, and faint notes of Meyer lemon. Flavours of sweet dried fruits, leather, caramel, cinnamon, cherry, and malt cookies permeate the palate. The finish is medium and smooth, getting dryer and chewy with tingling spiciness to tease.
Dewar’s Signature 25-Year-Old
Released in 2017 to replace Dewar’s Signature, this blended Scotch whisky is made exclusively with malt and grain whiskies matured for at least 25 years, including a finishing period in casks from Royal Brackla.
Tasting notes: Opens up with honey and floral apple blossom, warmed by cloves and cinnamon. The palate bursts with crisp apples, pears, and rich oak layered with vanilla, caramel, and butterscotch for a creamy texture. A touch of peppery spice adds depth, leading to a rich, honeyed finish.
Dewar’s ‘Double Double’ 27-Year-Old
The second in the ‘Double Double’ range, this blend is finished in Palo Cortado sherry casks to grant it heady, aromatic, floral notes along with the range’s characteristic silky smoothness.
Tasting notes: The nose at the top is saline and half-and-half, opening up to grass, green herbs and cherry pits. The exceptionally velvety mouthfeel gives way to caramel creams, wild honey, peach cobbler, smoked pineapple, and toasted oak. The finish has a lot going for it, with plenty of interesting notes.
Dewar’s ‘Double Double’ 32-Year-Old
Awarded Whisky of the Year at the 2019 International Whisky Competition, the 32-year-old is the pinnacle of Dewar’s ‘quadruple ageing’ technique.
Tasting notes: The aroma contains rich, ripe treacle notes with a hint of smokiness, while the palate is rich with caramel, golden syrup, raisins and dates. The finish has a lovely, soft, smoky edge to it, like the smoke released when chestnuts are roasting on an open fire.
How Do You Drink Dewar’s Whisky?
Here are some of the ways you can enjoy your Dewar’s Whisky:
- Neat: Recommended for beginners, this simply involves pouring your Dewar’s into a glass at room temperature. Sipping it slowly will help you appreciate the subtler flavours.
- On the rocks: For those who prefer a less intense taste experience, consider pouring or stirring your Dewar’s over ice. The chilliness from the melting ice will even enhance certain flavours.
- With a splash of water: Adding a few drops of water to your Dewar’s can expand its flavours and aromas, making them more pronounced.
- In a cocktail: Did you know that the Original Highball was made using Dewar’s Whisky? Try making your own extra smooth highball to get that classic taste, or perhaps something different that will please the tongue.
Is Dewar’s Good With Coke?
Yes, Coke and whisky are classic combinations. For a different drinking experience, try mixing some Coke with your favourite Dewar’s dram.
