The Macallan

The magic starts in The Macallan distillery. Most of The Macallan’s best whisky is matured in oak sherry casks that are brought to the distillery from Jerez de la Frontera in Spain. In 2004, a new product range was introduced by The Macallan as the Fine Oak series. In this series, the whisky is mellowed in bourbon oak casks and sherry casks. However, come 2018, the Fine Oak series was renamed to become the Triple Cask Matured range. 

As you can imagine, the Macallan has produced a number of expressions worth taking note of, particularly in its core series – Sherry Oak. The most generally available bottle is The Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Oak though The Macallan 18 Year Old Sherry Oak is also widely distributed throughout the world.  Other, more expensive versions of the Sherry Oak series, such as the 25 year old, 30 year old and 40 year old can also be bought. 

The Macallan also started to create and offer single malt expressions that have been vatted with whisky that is matured in used casks. As part of the Fine Oak range, The Macallan 18 Triple Cask is one of the most highly recommended from the range and is aged in matured European and American sherry-seasoned oak casks and American ex-bourbon oak casks. When you have the opportunity to do so, try it as The Macallan 18 Triple Cask is an extraordinarily smooth expression not to be missed. 

It may be surprising but despite The Macallan’s long history and experience in dealing with the distillation and maturing of malt whisky, The Macallan’s stills, crafted from copper, are the smallest in Speyside. The unique size and shape is gives the spirit maximum contact with the copper, which gives the spirit a new life. All the rich, fruity and full-bodied flavours of The Macallan comes from these stills. 

However, the greatest contributor to The Macallan’s outstanding quality and distinctive brand aromas and flavours is still their exceptional oak casks. A lot of resources are spent, compared to any other distillery, to source, craft, seasons and care for the casks that are crafted to specifications. 

The Macallan whisky colours are all-natural, with no artificial colouring added. This speaks to the Master Whisky Maker skills as to achieve consistency of natural colour from bottling to bottling is no easy task. 

Each bottle of The Macallan is carefully selected so that only the finest quality whisky is chosen to ensure the best single malt whisky is created. One of the finest in the industry, the “cut” or small portion that is selected is responsible for the full-bodied richness of The Macallan’s range of whiskies. This is why it is critical that each cut is chosen with care, as it is the basis of The Macallan’s quality whisky.

Every year, over 700,000 bottles of whisky are sold globally. The brands bring about a sense of history, prestige and class. It is also synonymous with quality whisky, which is why its legacy has lasted for over a century!

Consistently producing best whiskies that contain malt notes that are clear with the wood effect in the aging process that is apparent, The Macallan is always deliciously smooth with common notes of rich dried fruits and sherry and balanced by woodsmoke and spice. This best Scotch whisky brand has also released several rare and special bottles throughout the years. Recent editions include The Macallan 25 Year Old Sherry Oak (2020 Release) or The Macallan Sir Peter Blake Special Edition 2021. The Macallan Fine & Rare 1926 was sold at an auction for a record price of £36,000, in 2005. That record was broken in 2010 when The Macallan 64 years old was sold for $460,000!
