About Negroni Week
What does Negroni mean?
Negroni is a classic 3-ingredient Italian cocktail made of one part gin, one part vermouth, and one part Campari. It is believed that this classic cocktail was invented in 1919 at Caffè Casoni, Florence, by Camillo Negroni, an Italian Count.
Unlike other cocktails, traditional Negroni is stirred, not shaken. It is served on the rocks with the cocktail being poured in a glass over a large ice cube and garnished with orange peel as a final touch.
While it is relatively easy to make, a classic 1:1:1 ratio Negroni tastes bitter, leading to many variations like cold-brew coffee Negroni and Kingston Negroni.
How did Negroni Week start?
Negroni week was initiated by Portland-based “liquid culture” magazine Imbibe in 2013 as a celebration of the classic Negroni cocktail. When Negroni Week started, the cocktail was still on an upturn so raising money for charitable organizations around the world was like riding the cocktail tide.
Since the beginning of Negroni Week, participation has grown from about 120 bars to thousands of bars worldwide, raising approximately $3 million for charity.
When is Negroni Week 2022?
This year, the celebration is from the 12th to 18th of September.
Slow Food, Imbibe, and Campari are collaborating to increase their outreach through food, beverages, and hospitality. In conjunction with its 10th anniversary, funds raised from this year’s Negroni Week will proceed to an organization called Slow Food. This organization is a global movement that advocates the consumption of whole, locally-sourced foods and discourages fast food consumption. The focus is not only on nutrition but also on preserving culture and heritage as it relates to food.
Slow Food believes that food is tied to many other aspects of life. This is why they are chosen as it perfectly represents the ethos of Negroni Week to cultivate community, foster equity, and justice, and seek a better world for all through food and beverage.
Negroni Recipes
Classic Negroni
This absolute classic is loved by many and most importantly, very easy to make. For people who prefer cocktails on the bitter side, this would be the right pick.
Ingredients:
- 1 oz gin
- 1 oz Campari
- 1 oz sweet vermouth
- Garnish: orange peel
Preparation steps:
Add the gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth to a mixing glass filled with ice and stir until well-chilled. Then, strain into a rocks glass over an ice cube and garnish with orange peel.
Cold-brew coffee Negroni
Deciding on drinking coffee or a cocktail? Why not both?
Don’t be surprised by how well coffee and Campari go together. Adding concentrated cold brew will be like smoothing the edges of the classic as the earthy coffee flavour helps to balance out the bitterness of Campari.
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ oz cold-brew concentrate
- 1 oz Campari
- 1 oz sweet vermouth
- Orange peel for garnish
Preparation steps:
Stir all the ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice. Then, strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube and garnish with orange peel.
Kingston Negroni
First created by bartender Joaquín Simó, Kingston Negroni is a twist to the classic Negroni with fruity Jamaican rum.
Ingredients:
- 1 oz Smith & Cross rum
- 1 oz sweet vermouth
- 1 oz Campari
- Orange peel for garnish
Preparation steps:
Combine all the ingredients and then stir it with ice. Next, strain into a rocks glass over an ice cube. Garnish with orange peel for the final touch.
Conclusion
Negroni Week is not only about celebrating the classic Italian Negroni cocktail but raising funds for a global cause as well. So let’s join forces with bars and restaurants around the globe and contribute back to society.
