    Description

BERTON VINEYARD Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

BERTON VINEYARD Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, this is one of our favourites – big and rich with flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry and hints of choc mint. The Berton Vineyard Reserve range brings together wines from regions that due to their distinct climate and soil have excelled at producing particular varieties. Warm days moderated by off-shore breezes, rich red loam over well draining limestone are the foundation for the Coonawarra’s justified reputation for producing our best Cabernet.

Coonawarra is the most important wine region within the Limestone Coast zone of South Australia, credited with producing some of the best red wines in the entire country, and often described as Australia’s most famous terroir. It is located in the far south-east of the state, adjoining the border with Victoria south of Wrattonbully. Although vines were first planted here in the last decade of the 19th century by Scottish settler John Riddoch, it was not until the 1950s that the region received some serious attention when the famous Wynns winery was set up. Many other well-known wine producers followed suit, including Penfolds and Yalumba, but the region was not accorded its GI (Geographical Indication) status until 2003.

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
