Description

BERTON VINEYARD Winemaker’s Reserve Shiraz

BERTON VINEYARD Winemaker’s Reserve Shiraz, The Winemakers Reserve Black Shiraz is an extreme example of Australian Shiraz with deep colour and aromas of blackberry and plum over toasty coffee and spicy oak. The palate is full flavoured and intense with rich plum, blueberry and mocha notes. The tannins are ripe and dense giving great structure and length to the palate. A dry, full bodied wine best consumed within 2 years, however our Black Shiraz is made to withstand 5-10 years cellaring.

Above average rainfall early in the season made mildew control challenging, however, a heat spike and the maritime cool evening winds gave way to a mild extended ripening period, right through to harvest, giving us excellent quality and a good-sized crop. Both Padthaway and Coonawarra fruit were machine harvested during the cooler night conditions and transported in bins to our Yenda Winery. The parcels were fermented in stainless steel vertical fermenters for 4-6 days between 26° and 30°. The wine was then bag pressed at 1 Baume and left to ferment until dry, then racked onto French oak for malolactic fermentation. Wine was then clarified via centrifuge into stainless steel storage. Once all parcels were completed, blending trials gave us the final blend which we prepared for bottling.

The Winery is located in the New South Wales regional township of Yenda which has a population of around 1,600 people and is 580km south west of Sydney and 500km North West of Melbourne. The Winery site itself was established in 1945 and it has close ties with the development of the Riverina as a major Australian viticultural area. The winery has the capacity to crush and bottle approximately 20,000 tonnes annually and has a storage capacity of 14 million litres. From humble beginnings in 2005 Berton Vineyards has grown into one of the 20 largest Wineries in Australia (Wine Industry Directory, 2020). Both our winery and our wines have also received strong reviews and accolades both domestically and internationally. We have achieved our success through maintaining personal relationships with our customers, this in turn has created our success in both our global and domestic markets. Since acquiring the site in 2005 we have been constantly updating and improving our facility. Recent improvements include the addition of a new tank farm and warehouse.
