Monkey Shoulder 700ml Blended Malt Whisky
A best selling whisky, the Monkey Shoulder Whisky is actually a mix of three different single malts – Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kinninvie. The three malt components that form Monkey Shoulder blended malt scotch whisky’s smooth, malty and fruit character is a closely guarded secret, featuring an undisclosed combination of different Speyside single malts.
The term Monkey Shoulder harks back to the whisky making heritage. It’s a reference to a condition that maltmen, who worked at distilleries, sometimes endured after long shifts of manually turning the barley. The tough work – working long shifts and turning the barley – had a tendency to cause them to stoop and their arm to hang down. Just like a monkey!
This strain injury is a thing of the past as working conditions have changed, there are still distilleries malting barley by maltman manually. In today’s times, the name Monkey Shoulder lives on as an affectionate tribute, to honour the hard graft of all the maltmen past and present. Cheers!
The Monkey Shoulder Scotch Whisky is a superb blended malt whisky by WIlliam Grant. He poured his entire life savings of £755 into the construction of Glenfiddich distillery in 1886. Five years later Balvenie was opened on the same site as Glenfiddich, and almost a century later they were joined by Kininvie in 1990.
Made with single malts from the company’s three neighbouring Speyside distilleries in Dufftown – Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie, the blended scotch whisky are first matured in first-fill ex-Bourbon casks, are vatted together in small batches for up to six months before bottling at 40% abv.
The result is a smooth, creamy, supple and very malty Scotch which works superbly well neat, over ice, or in whisky cocktails. It’s a whisky that loves company and shows its versatility in cocktails.
Launched in 2005, the Monkey Shoulder blended malt scotch whisky filled a gap in the blended malt scotch category for a fun yet premium brand that resonated with both consumers and bartenders alike. In recent years, the William Grant & Sons group has run an on-trade cocktail competition called the Ultimate Bartender Challenge. Participants are encouraged to dream up wacky and innovative bar projects to form whisky cocktails.
In 2016, the Monkey Shoulder blended scotch whiskey was named the ‘trendiest’ Scotch whisky brand in the world in a poll of the world’s best bars by trade title Drinks International. In 2018, the same poll overtook long time champion Johnnie Walker as the best selling Scotch whisky among the world’s leading high-end bars. This sealed Monkey Shoulder’s place as the best blended scotch in the world.
On the nose, the aroma of marmalade, cocoa and malt with plenty of vanilla and some spice (nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon) with a hint of aniseed wafts through the class.
On the palate, a malty, creamy delivery with a suggestion of berries can be tasted. Juicy toasted barley, cloves and butterscotch with honey, hot-buttered-toast and dried apricot gives your taste buds a fantastic flavour.
