TIMAH Double Peated Blended Whiskey
The Timah Double Peated Blended Whiskey is an award-winning whiskey newly on the market. Timah whisky is Malaysia’s first double peated blended whiskey. Although you would not expect this country to produce an award-winning whisky, it was actually awarded the silver medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2020.
Producer Winepak Corporation has emblazoned the bottle with an image of Tristam Speedy, a British adventurer who became the first Assistant Resident of Perak (a state in Malaysia).
Captain Speedy was an adventurer in service to the British Crown. His leadership in bringing order to chaos earned him the Indian Mutiny, Punjad and Ufos Zai medals as well as favour with the Abyssinian emperor who tasked Captain Speedy with training his imperial army.
In Malaysia, Captain Speedy also played a major role as a peacekeeper during the war. Particularly the Larut Wars. This was when the Chinese secret societies in Malaysia fought over control of tin mining areas in Taiping.
The adventurous mix of flavours, of which it is described as a light, fruity whisky, ties in well with the spirit (see what we did there?) of the drink that was inspired by Captain Speedy.
Malaysia Whisky Timah
Malaysian whisky Timah is a name that represents the enduring symbol of enterprise in Malayan (after independence it was renamed to Malaysia) history that led to cascades of development for the country at the dawn of the 20th century.
Timah whisky reviews emphasize the subtle and smooth yet strangely rich taste. The unassuming notes on the nose make for an easy welcome to the dram. On the palate, it starts off with a faint floral flavour and is caravanned through for a breezy smooth finish. Before the taste of this light palate, a robust intensity greets the senses with a playful thrill before subduing into a sweet lingering warmth. Timah is imbued with a gentle tropical fruit peatiness that stays bright without undue intensity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on Timah Whiskey
1. Is Timah whiskey distilled in Malaysia?
Yes, the Timah whiskey is distilled in Puchong, Malaysia. Timah creator Winepak Corporation, has about 30 years of beverage production for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
2. What is double peated whiskey?
You may have heard of peated whiskey but not double peated whiskey. Peat is basically decomposed organic plant matter that has decomposed for 1000 – 5000 years, just like coal. Peat can most famously be found in Scotland with 23 percent of the country covered in it.
Historically, Scots used peat to heat pot stills. When drying the damp malt, which is essential in whisky making, the peat-heated fire brings the smoke into the grains. How long the malt is dried over peat determines the smokiness of the eventual whisky.
Double peated whiskey simply refers to the blend of two different types of peated whiskey, giving a usually sublime tasting whiskey.
3. What is the Timah whiskey controversy?
In October 2021, the Consumer Association of Penang (CAP) called on the Malaysian government to ban TImah whisky as it was deemed as insult to the Muslim community. The CAP said that the image of Captain Speedy on the bottle was an uncalled for gimmick as it resembled a religious person. The CAP also said that the name ‘Timah’ resembled a Malay and Muslim name shortened from the name ‘Fatimah’ and wanted the government and relevant authorities to ban the product immediately.
However, it was explained by Timah Whiskey that Timah referred to the Malayan tin mining era during the British colonial days of Malaya, meaning ‘tin’ and that the image depicted on the bottle’s label was Captain Speedy who introduced whisky culture to Malaysia.
