Description

WOODSTOCK Deep Sands Shiraz

The hero variety of the region, Woodstock Deep Sands Shiraz is sourced from Woodstock Estate and neighbouring vineyards in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. These vines are all on sandy soils which contribute the floral aromatics to Woodstock Shiraz. The ratio between bunches and leaves are closely monitored to ensure vineyard balance, so that each vine can deliver full, ripe flavours to every bunch.

Vintage 2017 was started with a late budburst from a cool spring. High soil moisture resulted in excellent vine health and vigour. With only 2 days over 40c the vines maintained strong canopies the full season. The conditions caused a later than normal vintage, but the late warm conditions with cool nights has crafted elegant wines with excellent flavour development. After fermentation on skins for a minimum of 5 days, the ’Deep Sands’ Shiraz was predominantly matured in Stainless Steel tanks, with a minority aged in 2nd and 3rd use oak for up to 12 months.

When tasting this Shiraz, generosity of colour and flavour are clear and evident. The vibrant, floral and spicy bouquet brings together both red and black fruits like cherries and plums. The classic McLaren Vale earthiness comes through on the palate, supported by white pepper spice that balances the fruit concentration and the soft yet structured tannins. While young this Shiraz is bright and elegant. With time in the bottle (5—10 years) this wine will soften and develop interesting tertiary characters such as cigar box and leather.
