Originally, Jean Martell used grapes Borderie subregion’s vineyards. He also used Trocais oak as casks. This turned out to produce an exceptionally smooth cognac. When Jean Martell died in 1753, his widow and his two sons, followed by his grandson, carried on this tradition and further developed the business. An uncompromising philosophy, “I want only the best, without artifice”, was what Rachel Martell (Jean Martell’s wife) upheld. Eventually, the Martell brand became the best cognac brand in England in 1814 and was welcomed to the world with open arms.

But before that, in 1783, the Treaty of Paris, which recognized the United States’ independence led way to the first shipment of Martell cognac to the United States’ shores. A total of 87 units of Martell Eaux-de-vie was delivered then. King George II also allowed Martell Cognac to be imported into England during the continental blockade, once again proving that one simply cannot live without Martell cognac.

Martell has indeed been a favourite for many, being served abroad the Queen Mary in 1936, was served at the coronation of King George V of England and the Concorde in 1977.

The very first Martell Very Superior Old Pale (VSOP) Medaillon cognac was created in 1831. Blended from old Eaux-de-vie that is chosen from the best four crus in the Cognac region, the cognac bears a gold medallion that has the portrait of Louis XIV engraved on it. This is to commemorate 1715 when the House of Martell was born. This best cognac is also known as the Martell VSOP Medaillon old fine cognac as Troncais oak is used in the aging process. Since its creation, it has gone on to symbolize refinement and savoir-faire globally.

However, arguably the most famous cognac produced by Martell is the Martell Cordon Bleu, which was created in 1912. Bottled by Edouard Martell, the Cordon Bleu is synonymous with quality cognacs and is unequalled in the world of cognac. Aged in fine-grain oak barrels, the Martell Cordon Bleu is full of flavour.

Another range of cognacs from the famous Martell house is the Martell XO. Aged in barrels of fine-grained oak and having gone through double distillation, the Grande Champagne Eaux-de-vie is revealed but balanced by the elegance of the Eaux-de-vie from the rare Borderies cru. The results? A cognac that has an intense, forceful yet charismatic personality.

To take note of, the Martell Noblige Cognac is a stylish and elegant cognac produced by Martell. There is an old French saying ‘noblesse oblige’, which means ‘nobility carries obligation’.
