Originally, Jean Martell used grapes Borderie subregion’s vineyards. He also used Trocais oak as casks. This turned out to produce an exceptionally smooth cognac. When Jean Martell died in 1753, his widow and his two sons, followed by his grandson, carried on this tradition and further developed the business. An uncompromising philosophy, “I want only the best, without artifice”, was what Rachel Martell (Jean Martell’s wife) upheld. Eventually, the Martell brand became the best cognac brand in England in 1814 and was welcomed to the world with open arms.
But before that, in 1783, the Treaty of Paris, which recognized the United States’ independence led way to the first shipment of Martell cognac to the United States’ shores. A total of 87 units of Martell Eaux-de-vie was delivered then. King George II also allowed Martell Cognac to be imported into England during the continental blockade, once again proving that one simply cannot live without Martell cognac.
Martell has indeed been a favourite for many, being served abroad the Queen Mary in 1936, was served at the coronation of King George V of England and the Concorde in 1977.
The very first Martell Very Superior Old Pale (VSOP) Medaillon cognac was created in 1831. Blended from old Eaux-de-vie that is chosen from the best four crus in the Cognac region, the cognac bears a gold medallion that has the portrait of Louis XIV engraved on it. This is to commemorate 1715 when the House of Martell was born. This best cognac is also known as the Martell VSOP Medaillon old fine cognac as Troncais oak is used in the aging process.
