National Liqueur Day Offers Online in Malaysia

On the 16th of October every year, the world comes together to celebrate this special occasion by raising a glass of liqueur to the sky! Let’s learn more about liqueur, the different types of liqueur and find the right bottle for you.

What is liqueur?

Liqueur is an alcoholic drink distilled and then sweetened with sugar syrup. Additional spices, herbs, fruits and oils can be added to give it a unique kick.

Usually served with or after dessert or as an aperitif. Aperitifs are low-alcohol drinks that are designed to awaken the appetite and the palate before a hearty meal to unwind with for the day. Liqueurs such as Campari are popular aperitifs which work well to rouse your digestive system. Think of it as a pre-dinner teaser that further enhances your dining experience!

Liqueur, not Liquor!

They may sound similar but liquor and liqueur are two fundamentally distinct beverages. The differences mainly boil down to how these drinks taste.

Liqueurs are heavier, sweeter and more fragrant than liquor, though there are a few exceptions. When served, liqueur is usually mixed in with other drinks as a flavouring agent whereas liquors like rum, whisky and brandy are used as the base of a drink.

Most liquor tends to sit at 40 to 55% ABV whereas liqueur is a lot lighter, averaging 15 to 30% ABV.

There are different liqueur varieties, but they can be categorised by liqueur brands (proprietary recipes) or flavour profiles. Here is a list of liqueur types that are most popular in the market today:

  • Kahlua
  • Frangelico
  • St. Germain
  • Amaretto
  • Baileys Irish Cream
  • Cointreau
  • Campari
  • Sambuca

Fun facts

Here are some fun facts about everyone’s favourite beverage!

  • Liqueur comes from the Latin word “liquifacere” which means “to make liquid”.
  • Liqueur was first produced in the 13th century by monks and alchemists as medicines, love potions and aphrodisiacs but was later manufactured as an alcoholic beverage.
  • The liqueur Absinthe is banned in some countries for having hallucinogenic properties.
  • Liqueur distilleries do not age the beverage like other alcohols but instead, let it rest so that flavours are well married to one another.

How National Liqueur Day got its start

The origin of liqueur can be dated back 400 BC where the Egyptians flavoured distilled wine with honey and cinnamon. Here we can see the rough blueprint that would eventually become the liqueur that we know of today.

Fast forward to 16th century France, liqueur was introduced to the French court by Italian Catherine de Medici after she married Henry II. When the British-Indian spice trade route opened up decades later, the variety of liqueur exploded as new spices and herbs were brought in from different parts of the world.

Liqueur isn’t only rich in taste but also in history and National Liqueur Day was founded to celebrate it.
