History and origin

Located in Rothes, Speyside, the Glenrothes Distillery has been crafting Scotland’s finest single malt whiskies since 1879.

For over a century, Glenrothes’ journey has been marked by the spirit of innovation and a quest for excellency. This commitment to expert craft and authenticity results in no-nonsense whiskies of exceptional quality.

What type of whisky is Glenrothes?

Glenrothes is a single-malt scotch whisky. That is, it originates from a single Scottish distillery, crafted exclusively using malted barley, water, and yeast. It is then aged in an oak cask no bigger than 700 litres for at least three years.

How is Glenrothes made?

Glenrothes follows a typical process for making single malt scotch with a few additions to make its whiskies exceptional:

  1. Malting: Grains are warmed up in hot water, causing them to germinate. In the process, starches contained within the grain are converted into soluble sugars.
  2. Drying: The germinated grains are dried in a kiln before being ground up in a mill for the next stage.
  3. Fermentation: The ground cereal is mixed with hot water, producing a hot, sweet liquid. This liquid is then separated and cooled down before yeast is added to ferment it into a kind of beer.
  4. Distilling: The beer is slowly distilled together with soft and pure spring water in copper stills to create a unique, high-quality flavour.
  5. Maturing: The distilled liquid is then transferred to sherry-infused oak casks to mature for a maximum of 15 years.

This process creates a complex yet refined, naturally coloured whisky with delicate sherry notes underpinned by layers of fruity depth.

What does Glenrothes taste like?

Glenrothes 12

A light, gentle bouquet with hints of banana, earthy vanilla sheriff funk and stewed apple. Tastes of banana, citrusy lemon, refreshing melon and a sprinkle of cinnamon. The finale is long and sweet, graced with a dash of baking spice and a medley of stewed fruits.

Glenrothes 18

The aroma of ripe pear and sweet vanilla pods is tempered by aromatic orange oil. This is followed by the rich and deep flavour of ginger, pear, and rose water. It finishes on a sweet note balanced with spice and a gently peppery undertone.

Glenrothes 25

It has a nutty aroma with notes of ripe peaches, liquid caramel, and zesty orange peel. The flavour has notes of vanilla, ripe stone fruit, and orange oil, infused with toasted almonds, Swiss milk chocolate, delicate oak notes, and lingering sweet spice.

Glenrothes Whisky Maker’s Cut

Notes of burnt toast, cherry syrup, and a touch of copper tingle the nose. The palate features sweet brown sugar, honey, and gentle spices but also bitter orange peel, a whiff of fennel and powdered coffee, and a touch of Earl Grey.

Food pairing

Here are some foods you can pair up with your Glenrothes:

  • Chocolate: White chocolate works well with the fruity notes of Glenrothes 12.
  • Pumpkin pie: Glenrothes Single Malt Scotch has a heavy vanilla note with hints of spice, making it ideal with luscious pumpkin pie.
  • Meat: A high-protein meat like lamb, pork or duck is a good match with a medium-bodied whisky like Glenrothes 12.
  • Charcuterie: The honeyed sweetness of Glenrothes Vintage Reserve single malt whisky harmonises brilliantly with the salt and silky texture of prosciutto.

Overall, Glenrothes whisky pairs best with meats, cheeses, and sweet dishes. But there are no rules when it comes to whisky pairing, so go wild and create unique combinations.

How to drink Glenrothes?

Here are a few ways to drink The Glenrothes Single Malt Scotch Whisky:

  • Straight
  • On the rocks
  • With a bit of water
  • With club soda
  • With ginger ale

Of course, there’s no one way to drink your Glenrothes, so feel free to experiment or go with your preferences.

How to store Glenrothes

Here’s the proper way to store your Glenrothes whisky:

1. Avoid direct light

Always store your whisky away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s rays can deteriorate the whisky’s condition and cause the label to fade over time.

2. Keep the bottles upright

Whisky bottles should always be kept upright and never stored on their side.

3. Keep the conditions cool

You want the temperature to be cool but not too cold (as this can make the whisky cloudy or evaporate). Thus, storing whisky in a fridge or freezer is a no-no. The ideal temperature is between 15 and 20°C.

4. Avoid humidity

If whisky gets hot, it can expand and damage the cork seal. Store your bottles in a cool, dry place.

5. Keep sealed once opened

Once a bottle is opened, store it in a sealed container to prevent exposure to oxygen. Replace the cork with a bottle cap or use a decanter with a tight seal.

6. Finish off nearly empty bottles

Many of us keep a special bottle reserved for significant occasions. If you intend to keep your whisky for a long time, decanting it into a smaller bottle once there is roughly half left will help it retain more of its vibrancy.

Notable Awards

Glenrothes has been honoured with some of the most prestigious awards, a testament to its quality:

  • Two Gold Medals for The Glenrothes Select Reserve and Two Gold Medals for The Glenrothes Vintage Reserve at the Scotch Whisky Masters 2015.
  • The Glenrothes 25-year-old single malt scotch whisky won the Chairman’s Trophy at the 2018 Ultimate Spirits Challenge.
  • The Glenrothes 18-Year-Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky won the Chairman’s Trophy and Top 100 position at the 2020 Ultimate Spirits Challenge.
