BenRiach 21 Year Old
BenRiach 21 Year Old, matured for at least twenty-one years in a combination of four types of casks: bourbon barrels, virgin oak casks, Pedro Ximenez sherry casks and red wine casks. The whisky from these four woods has then been expertly blended together by our Master Blender to create a multi-faceted and superbly balanced malt, with each cask type adding unique notes to the taste experience: VANILLA, CHOCOLATE and RED FRUITS, developing from BENRIACH’S SIGNATURE SWEET BARLEY AND FRUIT-LADEN STYLE.
BenRiach have long been a distillery to keep your eye out for if you’re interested in whiskies with inventive maturation periods, and here’s a perfect example! This 21 year old has been drawn from a mixture of four casks – bourbon barrels, virgin oak casks, Pedro Ximenéz Sherry casks and red wine casks.
The story of BenRiach – ‘the Hill of the Red Deer’, is typical of the great Speyside distilleries. Built in 1898, the distillery is sited amongst the rolling barley fields that rise to the foothills of the Grampian mountains. The barley used in crafting the whisky was grown around the distillery and the water was, and still is, drawn through the rock that lies deep below the distillery.
In April 2004, the distillery, which was previously under the ownership of Chivas Brothers, was acquired by 3 entrepreneurs (2 of which are South African), led by Scotch Whisky industry veteran Billy Walker. The BenRiach Distillery Company was then born.
