Our story
In 1843, William Matheson founded the Glenmorangie Distillery in the Scottish Highlands. The Distillery’s peaceful surroundings on the banks of the Dornoch Firth inspired him. In addition, he brought forth a pioneering single malt whisky wonderfully complex and exceptionally smooth. Ever since, we have pursued our craft with uncompromising dedication – endlessly creative in our quest for perfection. To this day, we honour the Distillery’s provenance in our award-winning single malt. We distilled it’s pure and smooth spirit in Scotland’s tallest stills. Moreover, we mature it in the finest casks and perfected by The Men of Tain. Glenmorangie will surely delight malt whisky lovers for generations to come. This is because with the hands of these select craftsmen, the guardians of our spirit.
Pursuing Perfection
We’ve always realised that pursuing perfection is rather a long journey. We just know it’s a trip worth making.
The Tallest Stills
Our stills are the tallest in Scotland. They are 8 metres high (26ft 1/4 inches) with their long copper necks standing at 5.14 metres (16ft 10 1/4 inches). In addtition, it’s the same height as a fully grown adult giraffe! Which means that only the very lightest and purest vapours make it to the top. This will give a smoother, more elegant whisky.
We Only Use Our Casks Twice
At Glenmorangie we select the finest oak casks in which to mature our whisky. But that’s not all, because we then only use each one twice for Original (whilst many others use their up to five or six times), ensuring that the maximum amount of flavour is always extracted during maturation, delivering a rounder, smoother taste.
Pioneers In Extra Maturation
Having pioneered extra maturation nearly 30 years ago, our whisky creators continue to travel the world in their search for exceptional casks. Casks that will provide additional, intriguing layers of flavours to the original character of Glenmorangie.
Extra maturation
Dr Bill Lumsden, an expert in his field, has spent over twenty years experimenting in order to perfect the different finishes that make up our extra-matured range.
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, Glenmorangie Lasanta and Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or will be first matured in American white oak casks for ten years before being extra matured in a hand-selected cask.
Extra Maturation In Port Pipes
Ruban is Gaelic for Ruby, representing the finest Ruby Port casks from the ‘Quintas’ or wine estates of Portugal in which Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban is extra matured.
Extra Maturation In Sherry Butts
‘Lasanta’ is Gaelic for warmth and passion, a nod to the Spanish provenance of our Oloroso and PX Sherry butts in which we extra-mature Glenmorangie Lasanta.
Extra Maturation In Sauternes Cask
Both Gaelic and French for gold, ‘Or’ is so named because of the rich colour that develops once Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or has been extra matured in the finest Sauternes wine casks from France.
