The Singleton of Glen Ord 40 Year Old
The Singleton of Glen Ord 40 Year Old is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky from Glen Ord Distillery, bottled at 45.9% ABV in the official 70cl presentation. The final release in The Singleton’s Epicurean Odyssey Series, it stands out for an unusually extensive 28-year secondary maturation experiment and a finishing period in ex-Zacapa XO and Royal rum casks.
Made at Glen Ord in Scotland’s Highlands, this 40-year-old single malt is the final expression in The Singleton Epicurean Odyssey Series. Malt Master Maureen Robinson used a 28-year secondary maturation experiment to build flavour, then finished the whisky in casks previously used for Zacapa XO and Zacapa Royal rum. The official bottling is presented at natural strength of 45.9% ABV.
Deep amber with copper lights, it opens mellow and lightly prickly, moving from dried apple and sage to plum wrapped in dark chocolate, sweetly spiced oak, toffee and oak shavings. The palate is smooth and layered with chocolate-coated pear, caramelised tropical fruit, banana and pineapple, while black pepper and drying dark-chocolate tannins lead into a long, lightly drying finish with waxy smoke.
The Singleton of Glen Ord 40 Year Old suits slow, undistracted sipping on a significant occasion or as a considered addition to a mature whisky collection. Serve neat in a whisky glass to appreciate its layered aroma and long, peppery finish; add water only gradually, if preferred.
